Question About Sunbeam Iron 4230
What is this plastic thing with holes in it, shape...

What is this plastic thing with holes in it, shaped like the iron's heat plate, and has a springy thing that goes across from one side to the other. Is it just a cover so the plate don't get scratched when not in use? If so, why all the little holes in it? I'm confused...
