do i need to cover the hot water feed to stop any leaks cos I only have a cold feed on my washing machine

0 You might need to just in case the valve on the machine leaked. In the real world, if you are just using cold water, the valve shouldn't open the hot water side of the valve. But if the valve gets some trash or small gravel in it, it could seep water out of the fitting where you put the hot water line. You could just hook up both lines to the machine and not open the hot water valve in the house hookup.
