GE electric dryer beeps when off, then stops after...

GE electric dryer beeps when off, then stops after banging on metal front panel that houses the controls(or I unplug}. Now, after a few weeks, the machine beeps while running, and then dies before clothes dry. I am thinking (hoping) bad ground somewhere? hope not a bad board, just out of extended warranty.
