Have F1000 B&D iron. Sticky stuff forms on solepl...

Have F1000 B&D iron. Sticky stuff forms on soleplate sometimes which gets on clothes I'm ironing. How to get off soleplate? Cleaning instructions say to use cloth dampened with water & detergent to clean soleplate. This doesn't take off the gunk. Assume scraping will scratch soleplate. Thanks
