will not turn on

While I was ironing I switched between dry and steam. I must have pressed down too hard on the button and the iron spat out dark water on my cloth. I guess that it went to cleaning mode. But now the iron won't turn on at all. I have unplugged it and waited and re-tried. No use--it won't go on.
I have had this iron for about ten years (purchased in 1999 I believe) and have never had a problem before. The iron gets lots of use.
