Selected program will not start

Going thru' the motions of RESET and SELECT program, the indicator flashes, but the selected program does not start! The light flashes 3 - 4 times, but I do not know what kind of error this may indicate. There is ample water supply. The only indication of any wrong has been a slight scraping sound, as if something is caught between the rotating and the stationary part of the washing tumbler!
